Warning: Too many hashtags can make your business look desperate

Hashtags are found on all of the social media sites these days. What are hashtags? Why does one need a hashtag? What are some of the best practices for using hashtags in marketing posts? Many of these questions roll through a writer's head when getting ready to post copy to their social media page.

Here are the answers:

What are hashtags?

A hashtag is a label or category for your social media post. Users can search hashtags on Google or on the social media platform they are using and get highly targeted content for what they are searching. Some social media allows users to follow hashtags and then the user can see content with those hashtags on their regular feed. Instagram is great for following hashtags and being able to see highly relative content on your regular feed.

Why do you need to use a hash tag?

The right hashtag can draw attention to your business from people who are interested in a subject in your social media copy. Some social media platforms even show how many possibly impressions a certain hashtag may give. The main idea behind putting a hashtag in your copy is because without promoting your posts the audience that will see your social media copy are the people who already like you page. Then you are stuck trying to get that audience to find your copy interesting enough to share it one their social media page. Instead of relying on your likes to share your posts, with hashtags people who are organically searching (or following) the hashtag you used will see your copy. The chance for conversion goes up exponentially.

What are some of the best practices for using hashtags in marketing posts?

Using a hashtag does not have to be a major science. Don't overthink it & don't overdo it! These are two really good best practices for using hashtags. If you are using a hashtag you took days and hours pouring over to think of the mot creative idea possible, chances are that hashtag is not ever really searched for. Pick something simple that relates to your social media copy. The pick another simple category or idea that relates to the same copy. Then pick a general hashtag that relates to your business services. Three hash tags should be plenty to get your post seen. Any more than that is overdoing it and may make your business look desperate for clients. I mean there's marketing to potential clients and then there is begging for people to use your service and you don't want to look like like a beggar do you?

More Than Your Own Audience

Follow the steps above and your social media channels are bound to attract more likes and conversions from potential clients. You will be sending your message to more than just the same people who have liked your social media page. Expand your audience!
